Please join us for Dr. Bell's discussion of how Bishop Daniel Payne became the first African American college president in the history of American higher education, after he purchased Wilberforce University on behalf of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church. The sale occurred in March 1863, just two months after the Emancipation Proclamation. Dr. Bell explains how Payne understood the relationship between emancipation and access to higher education. He will also assess the challenges Payne and other intellectual activists have faced in trying to institutionalize a vision of Black liberation.
